Karnataka's political landscape witnessed sharp exchanges on Tuesday as BJP leader and former minister R. Ashoka launched a scathing attack on the Congress government, particularly targeting Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Ashoka described Shivakumar's legacy as 'disastrous' and dismissed remarks by Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who had attributed current challenges to inherited problems and systemic failures.
Ashoka's sharp criticism of D.K. Shivakumar
Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Ashoka stated that the Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has failed to deliver on its promises. He specifically called out D.K. Shivakumar, accusing him of mismanagement and corruption. 'The legacy of D.K. Shivakumar is nothing short of disastrous. The people of Karnataka are suffering due to his incompetence and the Congress party's inability to govern effectively,' Ashoka said.
Ashoka's comments come amid ongoing political tensions in the state, with the BJP consistently targeting the Congress government over issues such as drought, water scarcity, and alleged corruption in various departments.
Byre Gowda's 'inherited problems' remark triggers controversy
Earlier, Minister Krishna Byre Gowda had defended the government's performance by citing 'inherited problems and systemic failures' as reasons for some ongoing issues. Byre Gowda, who holds the Revenue portfolio, argued that the previous BJP government left behind a legacy of financial mismanagement and administrative challenges.
'We are dealing with problems inherited from the previous regime. It takes time to fix systemic failures that have been entrenched for years,' Byre Gowda had said. However, Ashoka rejected this defense outright, calling it a 'weak excuse' for the Congress government's failures.
BJP's counterattack and demand for accountability
Ashoka demanded that the Congress government take responsibility for its actions instead of blaming the past. 'The Congress has been in power for over a year now. They cannot keep blaming the previous government forever. It is time they deliver on their guarantees and stop making excuses,' he said.
The BJP leader also highlighted specific issues such as the delay in releasing drought relief funds and the lack of proper implementation of welfare schemes. 'The people of Karnataka are tired of empty promises. They want results, not excuses,' Ashoka added.
Political implications and public reaction
The war of words between the BJP and Congress is expected to intensify as Karnataka approaches the next assembly elections due in 2028. Political analysts note that such exchanges are part of a larger strategy by the BJP to regain lost ground in the state after its defeat in the 2023 elections.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders have rallied behind Byre Gowda and Shivakumar, accusing the BJP of hypocrisy. 'The BJP is in no position to lecture us about governance. They left the state in a mess, and we are working hard to fix it,' said a Congress spokesperson.
The public reaction has been mixed, with some supporting Ashoka's criticism while others believe the Congress government deserves more time to address long-standing issues.
