ASI Allows Full Hindu Worship Access at Bhojshala Complex

NEW DELHI: In compliance with the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has granted the Hindu community full access to the Bhojshala complex for the worship of Goddess Saraswati. The decision, outlined in an ASI order dated May 16, draws from the High Court's verdict delivered on May 15.

High Court Ruling

The High Court ruled that Bhojshala, located in the Dhar district, is a protected monument and a temple dedicated to Goddess Vagdevi, also known as Saraswati. The court noted that historical literature establishes the character of Bhojshala as a center of Sanskrit learning associated with Raja Bhoj of the Parmar dynasty. The ASI order stated, "The court has also recorded a finding that historical literature established the character of Bhojshala as a centre of Sanskrit learning associated with Raja Bhoj of the Parmar dynasty."

Historical and Architectural Evidence

The ASI order further emphasized that literature and architectural references linked to Raja Bhoj indicate the existence of a Saraswati temple, a conclusion supported by ASI's own research. This evidence was pivotal in the court's decision to quash the ASI's April 2003 directive, which had previously restricted Hindu worship rights while permitting Muslim prayers at the complex.

New Access Provisions

The new ASI order explicitly states that since Bhojshala was a center of Sanskrit learning and a temple dedicated to Goddess Vagdevi, the Hindu community "shall have unrestricted access" for worship. This marks a significant shift from the earlier arrangement, which had been a source of contention between the two communities.

The order is expected to facilitate regular worship activities for Hindus at the site, which has long been a subject of legal and religious debate. The ASI has been directed to ensure compliance with the High Court's verdict and to make necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of worship.
