Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in India, for his outstanding work in conducting elections. Speaking at a public event, Sarma praised Gyanesh's integrity and efficiency, stating that his leadership has set new benchmarks in the electoral process.
Recognition for Electoral Excellence
CM Sarma emphasized that under CEC Gyanesh's stewardship, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has conducted free, fair, and transparent elections, including the recent general elections. He noted that Gyanesh's efforts have strengthened democratic institutions and inspired confidence among voters.
Bipartisan Support?
While the proposal has garnered support from some quarters, it remains to be seen whether it will gain bipartisan backing. The Bharat Ratna is traditionally awarded for exceptional service in the fields of art, literature, science, and public service. However, no sitting or former CEC has ever received this honor.
The ECI has not officially commented on the suggestion. Political analysts believe that Sarma's statement reflects the growing respect for the Election Commission's role in upholding democratic values.
