Ayodhya is experiencing a severe heatwave, leading to a significant drop in the number of devotees visiting the Ram temple. Temple authorities have implemented special measures to provide relief to visitors.
Temperature Soars in Ayodhya
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Saturday reached 42 degrees Celsius. The mercury is expected to remain above 40 degrees Celsius for the next 72 hours. The extreme heat has prompted temple administration to take proactive steps.
Special Arrangements for Devotees
Anil Mishra, a member of the Ram Temple Trust, announced that air-cooled waiting halls capable of accommodating around 3,000 people have been arranged for the convenience of devotees. Additionally, the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation is using fogging machines to spray water mist along the Ram Path and surrounding areas to keep the environment cool, as stated by Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi.
Sharp Decline in Footfall
Municipal corporation officials report that the footfall in Ayodhya has decreased by approximately 60% due to the heat. A senior official from the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation noted, “Normally, around one lakh people visit Ayodhya daily. However, the number has gone down to around 40,000.”
Changes in Deity Offerings and Rituals
In response to the heat, the temple administration has modified the ‘bhog’ (offerings) for the deity. “We have included cooling, hydrating, and refreshing items to protect the deity from intense heat. Key items include refreshing beverages like ‘lassi’ and fruit juices, especially mango juice. A special mixture of honey, curd, ghee, and water is being offered in a golden bowl,” said Anil Mishra.
Other summer rituals include bathing the deity with cold water. “The idol is being dressed in light, soft cotton or light silk clothing. Special efforts are being made to keep the ‘garbh grih’ (sanctum sanctorum) cool,” Mishra added.
