Bhojpur Trader's Desperate Suicide Attempt Amid Financial Crisis
A 54-year-old trader from Bhojpur district in Bihar is currently fighting for his life in a hospital after a harrowing suicide attempt. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, saw the man jump in front of a moving train, driven to despair by an overwhelming financial burden.
Mounting Debts and Unrelenting Pressure
Vijay Kumar Gupta, the trader, cited a crushing combination of factors that led him to take this extreme step. He was under immense pressure from business partners to immediately repay a loan of Rs 5 lakh, borrowed to start a poultry farm. Additionally, he had recently received a notice demanding payment of accumulated income tax, further exacerbating his distress.
From his hospital bed, Gupta recounted his struggles. "I was under heavy burden of loan that I had taken from my business partners for a poultry farm. They were putting constant pressure on me to pay back immediately Rs 5 lakh that I had borrowed from them. Besides, I had recently received a notice to pay my accumulated income tax too," he stated.
A Business Collapse and Failed Ventures
Gupta's financial woes have deep roots. He once operated a flourishing liquor business in Piro, Bhojpur, starting around 2001. However, this enterprise collapsed after prohibition was enforced in Bihar. In an attempt to rebuild, he relocated to Daltonganj (Medininagar) in Jharkhand to continue the liquor trade with partners.
His efforts to diversify led him to borrow Rs 5 lakh from a partner to establish a poultry farm. Unfortunately, this venture also failed, plunging him deeper into financial turmoil and despair.
Family's Account of the Tragedy
Gupta's wife, Supriya Gupta, provided a poignant account of the events leading up to the suicide attempt. She explained that persistent demands for loan repayment left her husband with no recourse. "My husband took this extreme step due to continuous pressure from his business partners to pay back the money. Though we requested them to give us a 10-day time to arrange for the money, they were unrelenting and adamant on their demand," she said.
Adding to the family's anguish, Gupta's brother-in-law, Vidya Bhushan Kumar, revealed that the trader had sunk into depression after receiving the income tax notice. The notice demanded payment of accrued income tax amounting to approximately Rs 2 crore, a sum that compounded his existing financial pressures.
Emergency Response and Critical Condition
The tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening when Gupta jumped before a moving train. The loco pilot acted swiftly, applying the emergency brakes in a desperate attempt to prevent the tragedy. Despite these efforts, Gupta sustained multiple severe injuries.
Doctors attending to him have reported that his condition remains critical. Police authorities recorded his statement on Sunday, documenting the financial distress that precipitated this desperate act.
This case highlights the severe mental and emotional toll of financial crises, underscoring the need for support systems and intervention in such situations. The community and authorities are now grappling with the aftermath of this distressing event.
