A tragic incident occurred in Jamui district of Bihar on Thursday morning when a speeding sand-laden truck struck a 15-year-old girl, Muskan Kumari, a Class IX student, while she was cycling to her coaching classes in Khaira market. The accident led to her instantaneous death, with her body trapped under one of the vehicle's wheels. The driver fled the scene and allegedly took refuge in a nearby house.
Violent Protests Erupt
The incident sparked widespread outrage among local residents and shopkeepers, who blocked Khaira market, vandalized the truck, and smashed its windows. When police arrived to clear the road and calm the protesters, a section of the crowd moved towards Khaira police station and began pelting stones. Two police vehicles were damaged in the process.
Police Injuries and Alleged Firing
Police reported that several personnel were injured during the stone-pelting, including a woman constable who sustained a leg injury and another constable who suffered injuries to a hand. Authorities claimed that shots were fired into the air to control the situation, although the administration later denied any firing.
Muskan's mother, Sanju Devi, alleged, "My daughter went for coaching at 6 am as usual. The stone-laden truck ran over her. Police came and fired at the agitating crowd." However, Jamui sub-divisional magistrate Saurav Kumar stated, "There is no such information of firing. No one was injured in stone-pelting. The body is still stuck under the truck's wheel and has not been removed." He added, "No firing was done by police. Some people tried to disrupt law and order by blocking the road. A few were detained. The situation is under control."
Detentions and Demands
Six people were detained in connection with the protests. The demonstrators demanded compensation for the victim's family and the immediate arrest of the absconding truck driver.
