Bihar Resident Arrested for Fabricating UPSC Civil Services Examination Rank

In a startling case of deception, a resident of Sheikhpura district in Bihar was apprehended by authorities on Tuesday for falsely asserting that he had secured the 440th rank in the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025. The results for this highly competitive examination were officially declared on March 6, 2025.

Celebrations Turn to Scandal as Fraud Unfolds

The individual, identified as Ranjeet Kumar, had been basking in widespread admiration and accolades from his local community, political figures, and even law enforcement personnel before his fraudulent claim was thoroughly exposed. His announcement sparked jubilant celebrations throughout his native Fatehpur village, located within the Ariyari block of Sheikhpura.

Local leaders, including former RJD MLA Vijay Samrat, along with several police officers, personally visited Kumar's residence to extend their congratulations on his purported achievement. In a further gesture of honor, he was invited to the local police station, where he was felicitated with traditional sweets and floral bouquets, mistaking his falsehood for genuine success.

Verification Reveals Truth, Leading to Arrest

However, upon meticulous verification of the UPSC results, it was conclusively determined that the authentic holder of the 440th rank is Ranjith Kumar R from Chikkaballapur in Karnataka, entirely unrelated to the Bihar imposter. Prior to the revelation, Kumar had disseminated a motivational video that subsequently went viral, wherein he eloquently discussed themes of perseverance and triumph.

"Life is a long journey, but there is only one test in it — to keep your focus on the goal... Work so hard that one day destiny itself says: ‘Even if I was late, I always belonged to you’," he proclaimed in the video, presenting himself as a successful UPSC candidate. Once the deceit was uncovered, law enforcement agencies initiated an intensive search operation, ultimately arresting him from Sheikhpura town.

Police Investigation and Broader Implications

Rakesh Kumar, the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sheikhpura, provided details on the ongoing investigation. "The accused has been arrested and is being questioned. The entire case is being investigated, and further legal action will be taken. We are also investigating if any other person is involved in it," he stated, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter.

This incident is not isolated, as earlier, another UPSC aspirant, Akansha Singh from Bhojpur district in Bihar, had similarly claimed to have secured the 301st rank in the examination. The UPSC later clarified that the legitimate candidate for that rank is an individual from Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting a pattern of such fraudulent assertions that undermine the integrity of the examination process.

The case raises significant concerns about the pressures and aspirations surrounding competitive examinations in India, prompting calls for enhanced verification mechanisms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
