The state government of Bihar has decided to complete the pending elections for the formation of empowered standing committees in municipal bodies across the state. Urban development and housing minister Nitish Mishra on Tuesday announced that district magistrates, who also serve as district election officers for municipalities, have been directed to ensure that the elections are conducted between May 26 and May 31.
Background of the Elections
The elections were originally scheduled to take place between April 15 and April 25 but were postponed due to unavoidable reasons. In municipal bodies where the election process had already been completed on April 15, the elected committees were allowed to continue functioning. Now, the government has decided to resume and complete the remaining election process in a time-bound manner.
Instructions for Fair Conduct
Minister Nitish Mishra instructed officials to ensure that the elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, and peaceful manner across all districts. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the schedule and maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
Significance of Empowered Standing Committees
The minister expressed confidence that the formation of empowered standing committees would help speed up development works in urban local bodies and improve urban governance in Bihar. Officials noted that these committees play a key role in municipal administration and decision-making related to civic development projects and local governance.
Expected Impact
With the completion of these elections, urban local bodies in Bihar are expected to have fully functional standing committees, enabling more efficient execution of development projects and better governance at the municipal level. The government aims to enhance transparency and accountability in urban administration through this process.
