BJP Accuses Mamata of Intimidation, Seeks EC Action

BJP Levels Serious Allegations Against Mamata Banerjee and TMC Over Poll Conduct

In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) colleagues, accusing them of employing tactics of "intimidation, fear, and violence" to disrupt the ongoing assembly elections in the state. The party has formally petitioned the Election Commission of India (EC) to take stringent action, including barring Banerjee from campaigning and registering criminal cases to probe these alleged incidents.

High-Level Delegation Submits Petition to Election Commission

A senior delegation of BJP leaders, comprising Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, and Sukanta Majumdar, along with general secretary Arun Singh and chief spokesperson Anil Baluni, submitted a detailed petition to the EC. The document cites specific incidents where Banerjee's statements are claimed to have violated constitutional and legal provisions governing electoral laws. The delegation urged the commission to ensure free and fair polls by addressing these concerns promptly.

Allegations of Voter Intimidation and Coercive Tactics

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju elaborated on the BJP's grievances. "We had a serious discussion with the EC over the havoc Mamata Banerjee and TMC are causing in Bengal by frightening voters to snatch their voting rights, attempting to capture the democratic process, and hijack elections," he stated. Rijiju alleged that Banerjee has been at the forefront of delivering threats to households, warning them against voting for the BJP, while also accusing officials of being co-opted into the TMC fold.

Rijiju further claimed that similar coercive tactics were employed by the TMC in previous elections, and he called on the EC to implement measures to prevent such practices this time. He added that the commission has assured the delegation of taking appropriate actions to uphold electoral integrity.

Specific Incidents Cited in BJP's Memorandum

The BJP's memorandum to the EC highlighted several incidents to substantiate their allegations:

  • On March 26, Mamata Banerjee allegedly urged people to "unite and resist" and to come out with "whatever is at home" on polling and counting days if any force is applied. The BJP contends that this statement incites violence and undermines public confidence in the electoral process.
  • The memorandum also accuses Banerjee of casting doubts on the credibility of the counting process, thereby eroding trust in the EC and the broader electoral system.

Controversial Remarks by TMC MP Mahua Moitra

In addition to Banerjee's statements, the BJP pointed to comments made by TMC MP Mahua Moitra at a public meeting. According to the BJP, Moitra stated that over 68% of people killed and incarcerated in the Cellular Jail (commonly known as Kala Pani) in the Andaman Islands were Bengalis, followed by Punjabis. She then reportedly asked, "Can you name one Gujarati who was there?" The BJP has interpreted this as showing contempt for people of India based on region and language, further fueling tensions in the electoral context.

Call for Immediate Action by Election Commission

The BJP's petition emphasizes the urgency of the situation, urging the EC to:

  1. Bar Mamata Banerjee from campaigning to prevent further alleged violations.
  2. Register criminal cases to investigate the incidents of intimidation and violence.
  3. Implement strict measures to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election process in West Bengal.

As the assembly polls progress, these allegations add a layer of controversy, with the BJP seeking decisive intervention from the Election Commission to maintain democratic norms and voter safety in the state.
