The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced the appointment of four new state presidents, signaling a strategic reshuffle ahead of upcoming elections. Harsh Malhotra has been appointed as the Delhi BJP chief, while Kewal Singh Dhillon replaces Sunil Jakhar in Punjab. The party also named new presidents for Odisha and Jharkhand.
Delhi: Harsh Malhotra Takes Charge
Harsh Malhotra, a prominent leader and former councillor, has been given the responsibility of leading the Delhi BJP. He succeeds Adesh Gupta, who completed his term. Malhotra's appointment comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for the 2027 Delhi Assembly elections. He is expected to strengthen the party's organizational structure and counter the Aam Aadmi Party's stronghold in the capital.
Punjab: Kewal Singh Dhillon Replaces Sunil Jakhar
In Punjab, Kewal Singh Dhillon has been appointed as the state BJP president, replacing Sunil Jakhar. Dhillon, a former Congress leader who joined the BJP in 2022, brings experience from his tenure as a minister in the Congress government. His appointment is seen as an effort to consolidate the party's base in the state, especially among Dalit and rural communities. Jakhar, who led the party through the 2022 Assembly elections, will continue to play a role in the national executive.
The BJP has also appointed new presidents for Odisha and Jharkhand. In Odisha, Samir Mohanty has been named as the state chief, replacing Manmohan Samal. Mohanty, a seasoned leader, will focus on expanding the party's footprint in the state dominated by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). In Jharkhand, Babulal Marandi, a former chief minister, has been reappointed as the state president. Marandi's leadership is expected to provide direction to the party ahead of the 2029 Assembly elections.
These appointments are part of the BJP's broader strategy to revamp its state units and prepare for upcoming electoral battles, including the 2027 Delhi Assembly elections and the 2029 general elections. The party's central leadership emphasized the need for dynamic leadership to address regional challenges and strengthen grassroots connect.
Political analysts view these changes as a mix of continuity and fresh faces. While Malhotra and Dhillon are relatively newer faces in the top leadership, Marandi brings decades of experience. The BJP hopes these appointments will energize the cadre and improve the party's performance in states where it faces stiff competition from regional parties.
