BJP Candidate's Threat Against Mamata Banerjee Triggers Election Commission Complaint
In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in West Bengal, a BJP candidate contesting from Panihati has ignited a fierce controversy after a video surfaced showing her threatening to physically assault Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The candidate, who is the mother of the victim in the high-profile RG Kar rape and murder case, made the remarks during a campaign interaction near Sodepur's Azad Hind Nagar on Saturday evening.
Explosive Remarks and Immediate Backlash
In the viral video, the candidate is heard stating, "Just as my daughter was beaten to death after being dragged by her hair, I will grab her (the CM) by her hair and spin her around. If I meet the CM, I will either put her in jail or throw her into the gutter and thrash her." These comments have drawn sharp condemnation from the ruling Trinamool Congress, which has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India.
Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee, in a letter to the chief election commissioner, described the threats as a "serious threat to democratic values and public decorum" and warned that they risk vitiating the electoral atmosphere. The party has demanded prompt legal and disciplinary action against the candidate.
Allegations Against Political Rivals
During the same interaction, the BJP candidate accused sitting Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh of attempting to destroy evidence in her daughter's case. She further alleged that Ghosh's son, Tirthankar Ghosh—the Trinamool candidate she is facing in the election—was fielded specifically to "cover up the crime." Earlier, she emphasized that her primary fight is against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whom she holds responsible for her daughter's death at a government medical hospital, claiming the murder occurred because her daughter spoke out against corruption in medical colleges.
Responses from Involved Parties
The BJP has remained silent on the controversy, with no official response issued at this time. However, the candidate's husband addressed the situation, stating they were unaware of any formal complaint and characterizing her remarks as made "in a moment of intense anger." He added that Trinamool workers have been trying to disrupt BJP campaigns in the area, contributing to the heightened emotions.
On the other side, Tirthankar Ghosh declined to comment directly on the threats, saying, "She is undergoing immense psychological trauma. I don't wish to comment." His father, Nirmal Ghosh, labeled the comments as "distasteful" and indicative of a "disturbed state of mind," confirming that the Trinamool Congress has initiated steps under the election code of conduct in response.
Broader Implications for the Election
This incident underscores the volatile nature of the ongoing electoral battle in West Bengal, where personal tragedies and political rivalries are increasingly intersecting. The Election Commission's handling of the complaint will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for maintaining decorum in future campaigns. The controversy also highlights the deep-seated grievances and emotional turmoil driving some candidates, raising questions about the boundaries of political discourse in a democracy.
