BJP Candidate's Powerful Saree Statement at Nomination Filing
In a poignant political statement, the mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, who is now a BJP candidate in West Bengal, once again used her attire to convey a powerful message. On Thursday, she filed her nomination wearing a saree inscribed with the phrase 'Shaktirupena Sangsthita', which translates to 'embodiment of strength'.
A History of Symbolic Attire
This is not the first time the candidate has drawn attention through her saree slogans. Earlier in her campaign, she wore a saree imprinted with 'Merudanda Bikri Nei', meaning 'My spine is not for sale'. This consistent use of symbolic clothing highlights her personal narrative and political resolve.
High-Profile Support and Temple Visit
The nomination filing was marked by the presence of prominent BJP leaders. She was accompanied by former Union minister Smriti Irani and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb. Before submitting her nomination papers, the candidate visited a Shiva-Kali temple with her husband, local BJP functionaries, and supporters, seeking blessings for her political journey.
Rally and Calls for Justice
Following the temple visit, a rally was organized where BJP workers raised slogans of 'We want justice'. The candidate reiterated her call to oust the ruling TMC government in West Bengal, emphasizing her campaign's focus on justice and accountability.
Smriti Irani's Endorsement
Addressing the gathering, Smriti Irani praised the candidate, stating, 'This mother is not just a BJP candidate; she represents every woman in Bengal. Under her leadership, Bengal will get justice.' This endorsement underscores the BJP's strategy of positioning her as a symbol of women's empowerment and justice in the state.
Financial Disclosure in Affidavit
According to the affidavit submitted with her nomination, the candidate disclosed her movable assets. The total value of her movable assets is Rs 19 lakh, which includes:
- Several bank fixed deposits
- Savings accounts
- Jewellery
Notably, she owns a car worth Rs 8 lakh, jointly with her husband. In comparison, her husband's movable assets total Rs 36 lakh, as per the affidavit.
This nomination event not only marks a significant step in her political campaign but also reinforces her use of personal symbolism to connect with voters and advocate for justice in West Bengal.
