BJP Intensifies Attack on Mamata Government, Demands Supreme Court Intervention in Warehouse Tragedy
In a significant escalation of political confrontation, the Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the devastating fire at a momo warehouse in Anandpur, Kolkata, which claimed at least 25 lives. The party has launched a blistering critique of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's administration, labeling the incident a "man-made disaster" resulting from systemic failures.
Political Firestorm Over Warehouse Tragedy
BJP national spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan spearheaded the attack during a press conference on Saturday, highlighting what he described as growing misgovernance, lawlessness, and corruption in the Trinamool Congress-ruled state. The fire incident, occurring merely 7 kilometers from Kolkata's seat of power, has become the latest flashpoint in West Bengal's volatile political landscape.
"A new example of the extreme limits of misgovernance is coming before us every day," Paswan asserted. "Recently, the Calcutta High Court observed that in West Bengal, it is not the rule of law, but the rule of the ruler that prevails. The incidents occurring daily clearly validate this assessment."
Pattern of Neglect and Safety Violations
The BJP spokesperson presented a disturbing chronology of recent fire incidents across West Bengal:
- Factory fires throughout January 2026
- The Anandapur warehouse tragedy
- Digberia paint factory incident
- Burrabazar chemical fire
- Gangasagar camp fire
- Nonadanga slum fire
"These successive tragedies have inflicted immense suffering on poor communities," Paswan emphasized. "Despite this alarming pattern, the state government appears completely indifferent to public safety concerns."
Government's Alleged Insensitivity Under Scrutiny
Paswan drew sharp contrasts in the government's response mechanisms, noting that while the Chief Minister allegedly intervenes in investigations involving political consultancies, no senior government representative visited the Anandpur fire site where 25 lives were lost.
"This was entirely a man-made disaster," the BJP leader declared. "No fire safety norms were followed, mandatory No Objection Certificates and safety audits were neglected, and accountability remains elusive. Action has been limited to the godown manager and deputy manager, while larger questions about corporate responsibility remain unanswered."
Paswan specifically questioned why no action has been taken against the CEO of Wow! Momo, whose warehouse was the site of the tragedy.
Broader Infrastructure Concerns Raised
Expanding his critique beyond the immediate tragedy, Paswan cited deteriorating infrastructure as further evidence of administrative failure. He highlighted several bridges across West Bengal that he claimed were in "extremely poor and dangerous condition":
- Majerhat Bridge
- Vivekananda Flyover
- Ultadanga Flyover
- Manganj Canal Bridge
- Kakdwip Bridge
"Referring to the famous song 'Highway to Hell' by AC/DC, it would not be an exaggeration to state that under Mamata Banerjee's rule, these bridges have effectively become highways to hell," Paswan remarked. "It is profoundly unfortunate that infrastructure is constructed only to be neglected into dangerous disrepair."
Mounting Political Pressure in West Bengal
The BJP's demand for Supreme Court intervention represents a strategic escalation in its ongoing political battle with the Trinamool Congress government. The warehouse tragedy has provided fresh ammunition for opposition parties to challenge the administration's governance record and responsiveness to public safety emergencies.
As investigations continue into the Anandpur fire, political observers anticipate intensified scrutiny of West Bengal's industrial safety protocols, regulatory enforcement mechanisms, and emergency response systems. The BJP's call for judicial monitoring reflects deepening concerns about institutional accountability in the state's political ecosystem.
