BJP Swiftly Revises Star Campaigner List for West Bengal Elections

In a strategic move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revised its list of star campaigners for the upcoming West Bengal elections within just 24 hours of its initial release. The party has dropped six leaders from other states and replaced them with six prominent figures from Bengal, signaling a sharpened focus on local engagement.

Key Changes in the Campaigner Lineup

The first list, which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, included several out-of-state leaders. However, the following individuals have now been removed:

  • Leander Paes
  • Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta
  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
  • MP Kangana Ranaut
  • Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary
  • Bijan Goswami

In their place, the BJP has added six leaders from West Bengal:

  • Khagen Murmu
  • Soumitra Khan
  • Locket Chatterjee
  • Jyotirmay Singh Mahato

Strategic Shifts and Local Focus

This revision follows a recent meeting between Bengal election in-charge Bhupendar Yadav and Ananta Maharaj, aimed at bridging differences and strengthening the party's local appeal. The updated lineup now includes notable Bengal leaders such as Mithun Chakraborty, Samik Bhattacharya, Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumdar, Shantanu Thakur, Khagen Murmu, Jayanta Kumar Roy, and Manoj Tigga.

Approximately 15 state leaders are expected to lead direct "at-the-booth" attacks against the Trinamool Congress, highlighting alleged misgovernance in Bengal. Additionally, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to be present during the nomination of Soumitra Chattopadhyay, a descendant of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, adding a cultural dimension to the campaign.

Targeted Outreach and Broader Campaign Efforts

Party sources indicate that the choice of campaigners reflects a focused push on ideological consolidation and broader cultural appeal. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister Annpurna Devi, who have already addressed the party's women's wing, are set to intensify outreach among women voters. Actor Hema Malini is expected to bolster this effort by highlighting the Women's Reservation Act and the "Lakhpati Didi" initiative, alongside a recently announced Rs 5,700 crore package for women.

Mithun Chakraborty is likely to target urban and youth voters, while beyond star campaigners, the party plans to deploy "chunao sahyogis" (election aides) from Bengal and other states. These aides will strengthen booth-level networks and assist local units with campaign coordination, ensuring a robust ground presence.

The swift revision of the star campaigner list underscores the BJP's adaptive strategy in West Bengal, emphasizing local leadership and targeted voter engagement as key components of its electoral approach.
