The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is bracing for a challenging Monsoon Session of Parliament, with the opposition expected to aggressively raise two major controversies: the NEET paper leak and allegations of fund theft related to the Ram Mandir construction. Sources indicate the session could commence on either July 20 or July 27 and is likely to continue until August 13.
NEET Paper Leak Controversy
The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) paper leak has sparked widespread outrage among students and opposition parties. The leak, which came to light earlier this year, has compromised the integrity of the medical entrance examination. The government has faced sharp criticism over its handling of the incident, with demands for a thorough investigation and accountability. Opposition leaders have vowed to corner the government in Parliament, seeking a statement from the Prime Minister and a detailed debate on the matter.
Ram Mandir Fund Theft Allegations
Simultaneously, allegations of misappropriation of funds meant for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya have added to the government's woes. The Ram Mandir Trust, which oversees the temple's construction, has been accused of financial irregularities. Opposition parties have called for a judicial inquiry into the matter, claiming that the trust has failed to maintain transparency. The BJP, however, has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated, asserting that all funds have been used appropriately.
Shift in Power Dynamics
The upcoming session is taking place against a backdrop of shifting power dynamics within the ruling alliance. With recent electoral setbacks in key states, the BJP's dominance has been challenged, emboldening the opposition to adopt a more aggressive stance. The government is expected to focus on its legislative agenda, including pending bills on economic reforms and social welfare, but the opposition's priority lies in holding the government accountable for the two scandals.
According to parliamentary sources, the government is preparing a strategy to counter the opposition's attacks, emphasizing its commitment to investigating the NEET leak and ensuring transparency in Ram Mandir funds. The BJP is also likely to highlight its achievements in infrastructure and digital governance to steer the narrative.
Expected Duration and Agenda
The session is expected to last around three weeks, with 18 to 20 sittings. Key legislative items include the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, amendments to the banking laws, and the National Research Foundation Bill. However, the opposition's insistence on discussing the scandals could lead to frequent disruptions and adjournments.
In a statement to the press, a senior BJP leader said, "We are ready to face any challenge in Parliament. The government has nothing to hide, and we will respond to every question with facts. The opposition is trying to divert attention from their own failures."
Opposition's Strategy
Opposition parties have held preliminary meetings to coordinate their strategy. The Congress party has demanded a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) to investigate both the NEET leak and the Ram Mandir fund theft. Other parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, have supported this demand. The opposition is also expected to raise issues such as unemployment, inflation, and the Manipur violence.
As the session approaches, both the government and the opposition are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown. The outcome will likely set the tone for the remainder of the BJP's term and influence the political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
