Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Sunday expressed concern over the rising number of fire incidents in the national capital and urged residents to take precautionary measures to prevent fire-related accidents.
Kalkaji Fire Incident
Referring to a fire that broke out in a residential building in Kalkaji earlier in the day, Malhotra praised Delhi Fire Services personnel for safely rescuing a 75-year-old woman trapped on the second floor amid intense flames and exploding LPG cylinders.
“The timely arrival of the fire brigade and coordinated relief efforts helped avert a major tragedy,” Malhotra said, while also appreciating the role of MCD Central Zone Chairperson Yogita Singh in the rescue and relief operation.
According to the BJP leader, the fire damaged a building in Kalkaji and also affected an adjoining structure. He commended firefighters for risking their lives to rescue the elderly woman from the blaze.
Call for Fire Safety Measures
Malhotra also used the occasion to raise concerns about fire safety in the city, noting that the increased use of electrical appliances during extreme weather conditions places additional pressure on ageing electrical infrastructure.
He appealed to residents to have the electrical wiring of their homes, offices, shops and commercial establishments inspected regularly, ensure timely servicing of air-conditioners and charging systems, and switch off unnecessary electrical points before sleeping or leaving premises unattended.
Political Swipe at Atishi
The BJP leader also took a political swipe at former Delhi Chief Minister and Kalkaji MLA Atishi, alleging that she did not visit the fire site despite the incident occurring in her constituency. He contrasted this with her criticism of the Hauz Rani accident near Max Hospital earlier this month.
“We do not want to politicise a serious issue like a fire incident, but it is unfortunate that the local MLA did not reach the site even after several hours,” Malhotra said.
He reiterated rising temperatures and increased electricity consumption during the summer months heighten the risk of short circuits and electrical fires, making public awareness and preventive maintenance essential.
