BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia Plants Sacred Tree Before Nomination, Prioritizing Ecology Over Ritual

In a powerful symbolic gesture, two-time BJP MLA from Khumtai, Mrinal Saikia, planted a 'jori' sapling (ficus tinctoria) before filing his nomination papers for a third consecutive term. Saikia, who has led a green movement in his constituency for over a decade, declared that planting a tree is no less sacred than offering prayers at a temple, thus elevating ecological responsibility to a spiritual act.

Green Warriors Join MLA in Massive Tree-Planting Initiative

Hundreds of volunteers, known as the "Green Warriors," participated in the event, wearing light green T-shirts emblazoned with "Green Warrior Khumtai." Saikia emphasized that these volunteers are not necessarily BJP supporters but are united by a common goal of greening Khumtai. "The Green Warriors work with me to plant saplings and make Khumtai greener. Besides them, other party supporters joined the rally as well," he stated, highlighting the non-partisan nature of the environmental effort.

Why the 'Jori' Tree Was Chosen for Its Ecological Benefits

Saikia selected the 'jori' tree for its significant ecological value. He explained, "Jori trees attract large numbers of birds as they offer abundant food and secure shelter throughout the year. Their fig fruits draw many frugivorous birds, including green pigeons, koels, barbets, orioles, bulbuls, and parakeets. The dense canopy also supports insects, making it ideal for insect-eating birds like magpie-robins, sparrows, tailorbirds, and mynas. With thick foliage that provides protection and nesting space, these trees become important gathering and breeding sites for diverse bird species."

He added, "Planting a tree is equivalent to visiting a temple. So, I planted a jori plant as a sign of worship of nature and the earth," reinforcing his message of environmental reverence.

Bicycle Rally and Walk Amplify Grassroots Connect and Simplicity

In a deliberate political statement underscoring simplicity, accessibility, and grassroots connection, Saikia and his supporters embarked on an 8-kilometer bicycle ride from his home in Melamara to the Salmara Tea Estate playground. This was followed by a 12-kilometer walk to the district commissioner's office to submit his nomination papers. The journey amplified his call for a greener Khumtai while demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices and community engagement.

Political Context and Upcoming Electoral Battle

Saikia has a strong electoral record, having defeated former Congress leader Bishmita Gogoi by over 27,000 votes in the 2021 polls and by over 16,000 votes in 2016. Notably, Gogoi left the Congress and joined the BJP in 2024, having won the Khumtai constituency in the 2011 elections.

In the upcoming battle, Saikia will face Congress candidate Roselina Tirkey. Tirkey previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Kaziranga parliamentary constituency against BJP's Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, suffering a defeat by over 2.448 lakh votes. This sets the stage for a competitive electoral contest in Khumtai, with Saikia's environmental activism and grassroots mobilization likely to be key factors.
