The political landscape was rocked on Monday as a row erupted over BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's allegedly derogatory remarks about former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. The controversy intensified when Dubey's own party colleague, Baijayant Jay Panda, publicly condemned the statements, labeling them as "unworthy, uninformed and totally unacceptable".
Panda's Strong Rebuke and Defense of Biju Patnaik
In a sharp response, Panda emphasized Biju Patnaik's legacy, stating, "Biju uncle was a towering personality... He was one of the greatest patriots of modern Bharat. Casting aspersions on his patriotism is fantastical and patently ludicrous." This internal criticism highlighted the divisive nature of Dubey's comments within the BJP ranks.
Dubey's Social Media Post and Allegations
The controversy stemmed from a post on X by Dubey, where he described Biju Patnaik as a "link" between Jawaharlal Nehru and the United States, including its spy agency, the CIA. Dubey alleged that the CIA used to fund the Congress party. Although part of his daily attacks on the Nehru-Gandhi family, the reference to the Odia leader in the context of illicit poll funding was interpreted by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) as an insinuation that Patnaik acted as a CIA agent.
BJD's Reaction and Naveen Patnaik's Retort
In Bhubaneswar, BJD founder and former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, son of Biju Patnaik, launched a scathing attack on Dubey, suggesting he needs a "mental doctor's attention". Naveen countered Dubey's claims by pointing out historical facts: "I don't think he knows Nehru had given Biju an office next to his in Delhi while he was still Odisha CM to help with strategy during the Chinese conflict and fight the Chinese."
Rajya Sabha Walkout and Political Fallout
The political tension escalated in the Rajya Sabha, where the BJD staged a walkout after its member, Sasmit Patra, lodged a formal protest against what he called "disparaging, false and concocted statements" made by Dubey against Biju Patnaik. This move underscored the severity of the backlash and the emotional charge surrounding the issue.
Dubey's Attempt to Defuse the Situation
In a bid to lower the political temperature, Dubey later attempted to clarify his stance by praising Biju Patnaik as a leading freedom fighter whom the BJP has always respected. He claimed that he had leveled no direct allegations against Patnaik, seeking to backtrack from the earlier implications. However, this effort did little to quell the uproar, as the damage had already been done, with critics questioning the intent behind his initial remarks.
