BJP MP PC Mohan Takes Sweet Dig at Raj Thackeray with Rasmalai Post
Bharatiya Janata Party MP PC Mohan delivered a pointed jab at Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Friday. He did this through a social media post featuring the popular Indian sweet dish rasmalai. This came as the BJP established strong leads in multiple Maharashtra civic elections, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls.
Mohan's Social Media Post References Earlier Controversy
PC Mohan, who represents Bangalore Central in the Lok Sabha, shared photographs of rasmalai on platform X. He captioned the images with a simple yet loaded message. "Ordered some rasmalai. #BMCResults," he wrote. This post directly referenced a recent political spat involving Raj Thackeray and another BJP leader, K Annamalai.
The controversy began when Annamalai, while campaigning in Mumbai for the BMC elections, described the city as an international metropolis not belonging solely to Maharashtra. His remarks sparked immediate backlash. At a joint rally organized by Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, Raj Thackeray launched a sharp counterattack. He mockingly referred to Annamalai as "rasmalai" and questioned his right to comment on Mumbai's affairs.
Thackeray's Comments and Annamalai's Defiant Response
During that rally, Raj Thackeray also revived a controversial old slogan. He used the phrase "hatao lungi, bajao pungi," which has historically been employed as a derogatory taunt against South Indians in Mumbai. This added a regional dimension to the political exchange.
K Annamalai responded with defiance to these remarks. He stated that some individuals had threatened to harm him if he visited Mumbai. "I will come to Mumbai. Try cutting my legs," Annamalai declared publicly. He insisted that his original comments about Mumbai had been misinterpreted and taken out of context.
Annamalai later clarified his position in detail. He argued that praising national leaders like K Kamaraj did not diminish their Tamil identity. Similarly, he said, calling Mumbai a world-class city should not erase the crucial contributions of Maharashtrians in building the metropolis. He emphasized that Mumbai's growth story remains inseparable from the hard work of the Marathi people.
Broader Political Context and Historical Precedent
Annamalai also criticized Shiv Sena leaders for what he called insults toward Tamil culture. He mentioned their mockery of traditional attire like lungis and veshtis. He expressed surprise that the DMK would ally with parties using such language. Interestingly, this is not the first time the BJP has used sweets for political messaging. In 2024, after the BJP swept the Haryana assembly elections, the party's Haryana unit sent a kilogram of jalebis to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's office in Delhi. That gesture symbolized what they called sweet revenge for their electoral victory.
The current rasmalai episode unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing vote counting in Maharashtra's urban civic elections. Early trends show the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance performing strongly across multiple municipal corporations. The party appears to be consolidating its position in key urban centers under the leadership of figures like Devendra Fadnavis.
