The Congress party on Monday took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the recent switch of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs to the ruling party, coining a new phrase 'Modi washing powder' to describe the alleged practice of giving clean chits to tainted politicians.
Congress Targets BJP Over AAP Defections
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the BJP's 'washing machine' is back in action, now using 'Modi washing powder' to wash the image of corrupt leaders who join the party. This remark comes after three AAP MPs—Sushil Kumar Rinku, R. K. Chaudhary, and Ram Singh—switched to the BJP over the weekend.
The 'Washing Machine' Allegation
The term 'washing machine' was originally used by opposition parties to accuse the BJP of giving a clean image to leaders with criminal or corruption cases after they join the party. Khera said the BJP has now upgraded its machine with a new detergent called 'Modi washing powder'.
- Congress alleges BJP shelters tainted politicians.
- Three AAP MPs joined BJP, citing dissatisfaction with AAP's leadership.
- BJP denies all allegations, says defections show confidence in Modi's leadership.
Political Reactions
The BJP hit back, saying the Congress is frustrated because its own leaders are leaving. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress is a 'sinking ship' and accused it of running a 'washing machine' of its own to cover up corruption.
The AAP, meanwhile, expressed disappointment over the defections but said it remains strong. The party's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said those who left were not ideologically committed.
The war of words has intensified as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, with all parties vying for political advantage.
