BJP Leadership Praises Annamalai's Popularity Despite Election Candidate List Exclusion

In a significant development following the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate announcement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, party MP from Karnataka Tejasvi Surya has publicly described former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai as the "most popular leader" within the party organization.

Campaign Role Clarification Amid Candidate List Omission

While campaigning for the BJP in poll-bound Kerala on Friday, Surya emphasized Annamalai's nationwide appeal and clarified his substantial responsibilities in the election process. "Annamalai is the most popular leader of the BJP, not just in Tamil Nadu, but he commands a large following all over the country," Surya stated during his campaign address.

The BJP MP further explained: "He has been given the responsibility of campaigning for all the candidates in Tamil Nadu. Even today, he is in Kerala where he enjoys a great following. He is also campaigning in Puducherry, where people are crazy about him."

Surya expressed strong confidence that Annamalai's extensive popularity and statewide campaign efforts would directly translate into electoral success for BJP candidates across Tamil Nadu.

Candidate List Announcement and Notable Absences

Earlier on Friday, the BJP released its list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections following negotiations within the National Democratic Alliance coalition. The list featured several prominent leaders including Tamilisai Soundararajan (contesting from Mylapore), Vanathi Srinivasan (Coimbatore North), and Union Minister L. Murugan (Avinashi).

Notably absent from the candidate roster was K Annamalai, the former IPS officer who has become a key figure in the BJP's aggressive expansion strategy across South India. Annamalai is frequently viewed as a direct representative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political vision and regularly appears alongside him at major rallies and public events.

Annamalai's Response and Campaign Commitment

Despite his exclusion from the candidate list, Annamalai has reaffirmed his commitment to campaign extensively for the upcoming assembly polls, describing this as his fundamental "responsibility" to the party.

Speaking with media representatives in Kannur, Kerala after a public meeting, Annamalai outlined his specific campaign schedule and responsibilities. "In this election, my role is to campaign for candidates across Tamil Nadu," he explained.

The former Tamil Nadu BJP chief detailed his campaign itinerary: "Right now, the party has given me the responsibility to campaign in Puducherry and Kerala till April 7. From April 7 to April 23, I have to campaign for all BJP and NDA candidates across Tamil Nadu. That is the responsibility given by the party to me. I'll be fulfilling that responsibility."

Election Timeline and Political Context

Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with voting covering all 234 constituencies across the state. The counting of votes has been officially scheduled for May 4, setting the stage for a crucial electoral battle in one of India's most politically significant southern states.

Annamalai's prominent campaign role despite his candidate list omission highlights the BJP's strategic approach to maximizing his popularity and organizational influence across multiple southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the union territory of Puducherry.

The development underscores the complex dynamics within the NDA alliance as parties negotiate candidate placements while simultaneously leveraging their most popular figures for broader campaign impact across different regions and constituencies.
