BJP's Bihar Rajya Sabha Challenge: Allies Manjhi, Kushwaha Demand Seats

BJP Confronts Rajya Sabha Dilemma in Bihar as Key Allies Assert Demands

The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections for five seats in Bihar have placed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a challenging political predicament. With the polls scheduled for March 16, the BJP is navigating demands from two of its alliance partners, who are reminding the party leadership of earlier commitments regarding Upper House berths.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Issues Subtle Warning to BJP Leadership

Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi has publicly recalled promises made during previous seat-sharing negotiations. Speaking to reporters in Patna on Tuesday, Manjhi asserted that his party was assured two Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat as part of the alliance agreement.

"We were promised two LS and one RS seat, and we are confident that the BJP leadership will honour its commitment... We will wait till the end," Manjhi declared. In what political observers interpret as a subtle warning, the Union minister added, "Ham maang nahin karenge... Dekhte hain dete hain ki nahin (We won't make any formal demand for RS berth. We will wait if the BJP leadership honours its commitment)."

RLM Chief Upendra Kushwaha Stakes Claim to Rajya Sabha Berth

Manjhi's statements follow similar remarks from Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief Upendra Kushwaha, who raised the issue just three days earlier. When questioned by media about his Rajya Sabha aspirations, Kushwaha pointed to what he described as earlier assurances from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"Although it's (decision about RS candidates) an internal matter of the NDA, it must be explained for what reasons I was promised the Rajya Sabha berth," Kushwaha told reporters on Saturday. When pressed about whether he desired nomination, he responded pointedly: "Aapse ham puchhen ki jis sanstha me kaam kar rahe hain uske head banne ki ichha hai (Should I ask you if you wish to become the head of the organisation you are working for)?" He indicated that alliance partners would need to discuss the matter collectively.

Chirag Paswan Clarifies Mother's Political Stance

Amid these demands, BJP received some relief from another ally. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan has dismissed speculation about his mother Reena Paswan contesting the Rajya Sabha elections. Paswan clarified last week that his mother prefers to remain outside active politics.

"Let me make it very clear that my mother is not a claimant for any of the 5 Rajya Sabha seats for which elections have been announced. She may have appeared in public in her capacity as a mother or as a wife, but she wants to stay away from active politics," Paswan stated definitively.

Strategic Importance of Bihar's Rajya Sabha Elections

The Rajya Sabha elections in Bihar carry significant strategic weight for both the NDA and the opposition Grand Alliance. Of the five seats up for election:

  • Three belong to NDA MPs whose terms are expiring
  • Two belong to Grand Alliance MPs whose terms are concluding

Based on current numerical strength in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the NDA can comfortably secure four seats—two for BJP and two for Janata Dal (United). However, to sweep all five seats, the alliance would require three cross-votes from opposition legislators, making the contest particularly delicate.

The March 16 elections have emerged as an acid test for BJP's alliance management skills in Bihar. How the party navigates the competing aspirations of allies Manjhi and Kushwaha while maintaining coalition harmony will be closely watched by political observers across the state and national capital.
