Chandigarh recorded the hottest day of the ongoing summer season on Friday, with the maximum temperature reaching 41 degrees Celsius. This temperature is five degrees above normal, marking the second heat wave of the season. According to the India Meteorological Department, a heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius above normal.
Season's First Heat Wave
The mercury first crossed the 40-degree mark this season on April 18, signaling the onset of harsh summer conditions. That day also marked the season's first heat wave. On Friday, the minimum temperature settled at 23 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal.
Yellow Alert Issued
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the next four days. The forecast indicates that the maximum temperature will remain around 41 degrees Celsius during this period, with heat wave conditions likely to persist. However, rain, lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 km per hour are predicted on April 29.
Rainfall and Temperature Trends
Chandigarh has received 73.4 mm of rainfall this season, which began on March 1. The highest maximum temperature recorded in April 2025 was 41.5 degrees Celsius on April 28. In 2024, the highest daytime temperature reached 42.2 degrees Celsius on April 27. The all-time record for April stands at 42.2 degrees Celsius, recorded in 2022.
Interestingly, April 2026 saw a significant anomaly when the maximum temperature dipped to 24.2 degrees Celsius on April 8, making it the second-coldest day in April since 1969. This highlights the wide variation in temperatures experienced during the month, swinging sharply from 24.2 degrees Celsius to 41 degrees Celsius.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. The yellow alert serves as a caution for heat-related illnesses.
