Coimbatore: Thousands of devotees thronged the Velliangiri Hills on Friday on the occasion of Chitra Pournami, with festivities being observed in a grand manner. Several lakh devotees have trekked up the hills, located near Poondi in the Western Ghats, since February 1. Trekking was suspended on April 23 in view of the assembly elections. With Chitra Pournami coinciding with a holiday, large crowds gathered at the foothills from Thursday evening, leading to heavy traffic congestion in the area on Friday morning.
Massive Turnout Expected Over the Weekend
Forest department officials and police regulated the movement of devotees and vehicles, allowing pilgrims to ascend in an orderly manner. Boluvampatti forest range officer Jayachandran said around 16,000 devotees had visited the hills so far, and the number is expected to rise significantly over the weekend. "With Friday, Saturday and Sunday being holidays, the footfall may cross 50,000 over three days," he said.
Strict Regulations and Medical Checks
Authorities have banned plastic items and cautioned devotees against rushing while climbing. Entry is permitted only after a medical check-up at camps set up at the foothills, and pilgrims must carry a fitness certificate to proceed. Officials added that additional forest staff and volunteers have been deployed across all seven hills to manage the crowd. Trekking is regulated based on weather conditions, and entry may be restricted during heavy rain.
Devotees Offer Prayers at the Seventh Hill
At the seventh hill, devotees offered prayers to Grimalai Andavar deity, who was adorned specially for the occasion. The festival has drawn devotees from across the region, and authorities are ensuring a safe and orderly experience for all.
