Congress Rajya Sabha Member Anurag Sharma Faces Formal Complaint Over Alleged Asset Concealment
A formal complaint has been lodged with multiple election authorities against Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader Anurag Sharma, accusing him of concealing assets and violating electoral laws. The complaint was filed by Dharamshala-based lawyer Nitasha Katoch, who submitted it to the Election Commission, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, and the returning officer of the Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly.

According to a press statement issued by the state BJP head office, the complaint centers on Sharma's electoral affidavit, which allegedly failed to disclose complete and accurate details of his movable and immovable assets as required under Section 33 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Sharma, who serves as the Kangra district Congress president and resides in village Beer in tehsil Baijnath of Kangra district, was declared elected to the Rajya Sabha with effect from March 7.
Specific allegations include:
- Failure to list several land properties in Kangra's Baijnath and Multhan areas, as well as Mandi's Jogindernagar region.
- Incorrect disclosure of details regarding a licensed firearm.
Legal Grounds and Additional Concerns
Nitasha Katoch cited Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, noting that Sharma had ongoing government contracts worth approximately Rs 16 crore at the time of filing his nomination. Under Section 9A, candidates with active government contracts may be ineligible to contest elections, raising questions about Sharma's qualification.
The complainant also raised procedural concerns, questioning the propriety of a hastily issued certificate by the legislative assembly secretary to Sharma. This aspect of the complaint suggests potential irregularities in the certification process that warrant scrutiny.
