The Congress party has sharply criticized the Modi government, alleging that it is in a state of panic over the current economic situation. In a statement, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera accused the government of mismanaging the economy, leading to rising unemployment and inflation. He claimed that the government's policies have failed to stimulate growth and that the recent economic data reflects a deepening crisis.
Congress's Allegations
Khera highlighted several indicators, including a slowdown in GDP growth, rising consumer prices, and job losses across sectors. He argued that the government's response has been reactive and inadequate, lacking a coherent strategy to address the challenges. The Congress leader also pointed to the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a factor exacerbating economic woes.
Government's Defense
In response, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed the allegations as baseless, citing various government initiatives aimed at boosting the economy. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the government has taken several steps to support businesses and workers, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and infrastructure investments. He accused Congress of playing politics with the economy.
The debate comes amid growing concerns over the economic recovery, with experts calling for more aggressive policy measures. The government has maintained that the fundamentals of the economy remain strong and that the slowdown is temporary due to global factors.
Opposition's Demands
The Congress party has demanded a comprehensive plan to revive growth, including increased public spending, tax relief for the middle class, and measures to boost employment. They have also called for a parliamentary debate on the economic situation. The opposition's criticism is likely to intensify as the country approaches key state elections.
