Congress High Command Announces 27 Candidates for Tamil Nadu Assembly Election
After extensive negotiations and internal discussions marked by factional disputes, the Congress high command officially unveiled a list of 27 candidates on Friday for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election scheduled for April 23. This announcement comes amidst ongoing challenges within the party, as it strives to present a unified front ahead of the crucial polls.
Key Renominations and New Entries in Candidate List
Out of the 18 sitting MLAs, 12 have been renominated, reflecting the party's strategy to retain experienced legislators. Among the notable renominations are Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai, who will contest from Sriperumbudur, and Congress legislative party leader M Rajesh Kumar, fielded from Killiyoor. Other sitting MLAs such as J M H Aassan Maulaana from Velachery, Ruby R Manoharan from Nanguneri, Durai Chandrasekar from Ponneri, and S Mangudi from Karaikudi have also been renominated from their respective constituencies.
Significant Additions and Constituency Shifts
A prominent new candidate is G K M Tamil Kumaran, the son of PMK floor leader in the Tamil Nadu assembly G K Mani, who recently joined the Congress. He has been fielded from the Vanniyar-dominated Pennagaram constituency, signaling the party's efforts to strengthen its base in key demographic areas. Additionally, Tharagai Cuthbert, who won the Vilavancode bypoll in 2024, has been shifted to Colachel, a constituency previously represented by J G Prince in the outgoing assembly. T T Praven will contest from Vilavancode, where he is expected to face BJP candidate S Vijayadharani in a closely watched battle.
Pending Decisions and Future Steps
The Congress has yet to finalize its candidate for the Melur constituency, indicating that further discussions and potential adjustments are ongoing. This delay highlights the complexities involved in candidate selection, particularly in regions with intense political competition. The party's leadership continues to work on resolving internal differences and finalizing the remaining nominations to ensure a strong electoral performance.
As the election date approaches, the Congress is focusing on consolidating its position across Tamil Nadu, with this candidate list serving as a critical step in its campaign strategy. The inclusion of both seasoned politicians and new entrants aims to balance experience with fresh perspectives, addressing voter concerns and party dynamics effectively.
