Congress Praises Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar Elected New CLP Leader

Bengaluru: Congress general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal on Saturday announced that the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has unanimously acknowledged the contributions of Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister over the past five years. He credited the party's top leadership for ensuring a smooth transition of power in Karnataka.

Venugopal's Statement

Venugopal stated, “Today, the Congress Legislative Party unanimously acknowledged the services of Siddaramaiah ji as Chief Minister over the last five years. The resolution was moved by none other than DK Shivakumar. He moved a resolution congratulating Siddaramaiah ji for his excellent service as the chief minister of Karnataka. It is a proud moment for the Congress party.”

He further added, “Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have been guiding lights for all of us. Under their guidance, a smooth transition of power has taken place in Karnataka. Going forward, under the leadership of D K Shivakumar and with the support of Siddaramaiah, the Congress will seek to return to power in Karnataka again in 2028.”

CLP Meeting Details

The CLP meeting was held at Vidhana Soudha, where outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed Shivakumar's name for the post. Senior Congress leader Dr G Parameshwara seconded the proposal, which received unanimous support from party legislators.

Announcing the decision, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said D K Shivakumar had been elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party and would take oath as the Chief Minister. Shivakumar, who is set to form the new government, indicated that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on June 3.

When asked if the oath ceremony would be held on June 3, Shivakumar replied, “third, third.”

Siddaramaiah resigned as chief minister on May 28, stating that his decision was voluntary and based on the suggestion of the party high command.

Background

The leadership transition comes as the Congress government in Karnataka completes three years in office. The party is also deliberating the composition of the new ministry.
