Congress Finalizes Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Candidates, Retains Majority of Sitting MLAs

After extensive deliberations, the Congress party has officially released its list of candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections on Friday. The announcement confirms the retention of 12 out of its 17 sitting MLAs, signaling a strategy of continuity in key constituencies.

Key Nominations and Leadership Decisions

In a notable move, G K M Tamil Kumaran, the son of PMK leader G K Mani, who recently joined Congress, has been fielded from the Vanniyar-dominated Pennagaram constituency. This decision follows his entry into the party just last Saturday.

Shortly after the list was made public, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai declared his intention to step down from his post after the elections. "I want to focus on the Sriperumbudur constituency following the assembly polls. Therefore, I will resign from my party position," he stated. Selvaperunthagai emphasized that his decision was not influenced by internal or external pressure, and he remains committed to working diligently for the party's success in the election.

Selvaperunthagai, along with Congress Legislature Party leader M Rajeshkumar, has been renominated from Sriperumbudur and Killiyoor, respectively. Other sitting MLAs who have retained their seats include:

  • J M H Aassan Maulaana (Velachery)
  • Ruby R Manoharan (Nanguneri)
  • Durai Chandrasekar (Ponneri)
  • S Mangudi (Karaikudi)

Strategic Shifts and Candidate Changes

The party has implemented strategic adjustments in certain constituencies. Tharagai Cuthbert, who secured victory in the Vilavancode byelection in 2024, has been reassigned to Colachel, a seat previously held by J G Prince in the outgoing Assembly. In Vilavancode, T T Praveen will contest, facing off against BJP candidate S Vijayadharani.

Internal Dissent and Unresolved Selections

The candidate selection process has sparked discontent among party functionaries in several areas, particularly in Pennagaram. Congress members have voiced concerns, alleging that long-serving aspirants were overlooked in favor of newcomers, such as G K M Tamil Kumaran.

In Erode East, functionaries have opposed the nomination of Gopinath Palanippan, labeling him an "outsider" and expressing frustration over the choice. Additionally, the Congress party has yet to finalize a candidate for the Melur segment, indicating ongoing negotiations and potential challenges in completing its roster.

As the election campaign intensifies, these developments highlight both the party's efforts to maintain stability and the internal tensions that could impact its performance in Tamil Nadu.
