Congress Intensifies Pressure for CBI Investigation into Warehousing Official's Suicide
In a significant development, the District Congress Committee (DCC) staged a vehement protest in Jalandhar on Saturday evening, calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, the District Manager of the Punjab Warehousing Corporation. The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, has sparked widespread outrage and political turmoil, with Congress leaders alleging ministerial misconduct and demanding stringent action against former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.
Allegations of Harassment and Political Interference
Leading the protest, Rajinder Beri, president of DCC (urban), asserted that Randhawa had named Bhullar in a final video message, accusing him of severe harassment and interference in official duties. Beri detailed claims that Bhullar had summoned the officer to his residence regarding tender processes, subjected him to pressure, physical assault, and public humiliation. Furthermore, he alleged that a video of the officer was recorded, with threats issued against him and his family, including warnings of harm by gangsters.
Beri emphasized that the minister had reportedly issued directives mandating that no official work proceed without his explicit approval. "The distressing circumstances, as revealed in the victim's video, indicate a systematic pattern of abuse that ultimately compelled him to take this extreme step," Beri stated. The Congress party has formally demanded:
- An immediate CBI investigation into the suicide case.
- Registration of an FIR for abetment to suicide against Laljit Bhullar.
- Swift legal action leading to Bhullar's arrest and prosecution.
Broader Political Repercussions and Calls for Accountability
Surinder Kaur, Congress halqa incharge from Jalandhar West, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of hypocrisy in its treatment of officers while claiming to represent common citizens. "The AAP administration's actions contradict their public promises, resulting in the mistreatment of dedicated officials and deception of the populace," Kaur remarked. She further urged for a comprehensive investigation into Bhullar's assets and the work conducted during his ministerial tenure, suggesting potential irregularities.
The protest saw the participation of several prominent Congress figures, including councillors Pawan Kumar, Gurvinderpal Singh Bunty Neelkanth, Dr. Jasleen Sethi, and Balraj Thakur. In a symbolic act of dissent, Congress workers burned an effigy of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, underscoring their dissatisfaction with the state government's response to the incident.
Background and Implications
Gagandeep Singh Randhawa's suicide has brought to light alleged instances of political overreach and corruption within Punjab's administrative framework. The case raises critical questions about the safety and autonomy of government officials, particularly in scenarios involving high-level political interference. As demands for justice grow louder, this incident could have far-reaching consequences for Punjab's political landscape, potentially influencing public trust and governance standards.
The Congress party's insistence on a CBI probe reflects a broader strategy to hold the ruling AAP accountable, leveraging this tragedy to highlight systemic issues. With the victim's video serving as a pivotal piece of evidence, the call for an independent investigation gains momentum, aiming to ensure transparency and deliver justice for Randhawa and his family.
