The Congress party has demanded the arrest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the alleged mishandling of funds collected for the Ram Temple construction. The demand comes after Rai is learnt to have questioned the role of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the donation-counting process in a statement submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Congress Alleges Mismanagement of Funds
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, "Rai handed over the keys to the driver. Who will do that? This raises serious questions about the transparency and security of the funds. We demand his immediate arrest and a thorough investigation." The party also sought an apology from PM Modi, holding him responsible for the trust's actions.
The controversy erupted after reports emerged that Rai had entrusted the keys of the donation chest to a driver, bypassing standard procedures. The Congress claims this indicates a larger pattern of financial irregularities in the temple fund collection.
Rai's Statement to SIT
According to sources, Rai in his statement to the SIT questioned the SBI's role in the counting process, suggesting that the bank may have been complicit in irregularities. The SIT was formed to probe the collection and utilization of funds for the Ram Temple, which has garnered donations worth thousands of crores.
