Congress leader K C Venugopal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging a major financial scam in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and demanding a Supreme Court-monitored investigation. In his letter dated July 1, 2026, Venugopal claimed that the scam involved a 'big fish' and that CCTV footage from the temple site spanning 7-8 months had been deliberately destroyed to cover up the criminal enterprise.
Allegations of Fund Misappropriation
Venugopal, the Congress General Secretary (Organisation), stated that the alleged theft of funds meant for the temple construction amounts to a serious breach of public trust. He urged PM Modi to order a probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court to ensure transparency and accountability. The Congress leader also highlighted that the destruction of CCTV evidence indicated a concerted effort to hide the identities of those involved in the scam.
Political Fallout and Demands
The letter comes amid growing political tensions over the temple's construction, which is a flagship project of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. Venugopal accused the temple trust and the Uttar Pradesh government of complicity in the alleged fraud. He demanded that the government immediately release all financial records related to the temple construction and cooperate with any investigation ordered by the apex court.
Response from Authorities
As of now, there has been no official response from the Prime Minister's Office or the temple trust regarding the allegations. The Uttar Pradesh government has also remained silent on the matter. However, sources indicate that the state government may issue a statement in the coming days refuting the claims.
