Congress Lays Out Comprehensive Roadmap for Puducherry Assembly Elections

As campaigning intensifies for the upcoming Puducherry assembly elections, the Congress party has unveiled an extensive welfare and governance roadmap, placing a strong emphasis on job creation, social security measures, and the long-standing demand for full statehood for the Union Territory. Addressing a rally in Lawspet, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, reiterated the party's commitment to granting full statehood to Puducherry, alleging that the current administration does not reflect the will of the people and is "imposed from Delhi."

Key Promises and Welfare Measures Announced by Congress

The Congress has announced a series of targeted measures aimed at boosting employment and alleviating financial stress on households. Central to their plan is a promise of monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,000 for unemployed youth, coupled with the creation of 30,000 new jobs across both public and private sectors. In a bid to enhance women's welfare, the party has pledged free bus travel for women in Puducherry. Additionally, they propose to relax the upper age limit for government jobs up to 40 years, aiming to widen employment opportunities for a broader demographic.

Healthcare and Governance Reforms Highlighted

In the healthcare sector, Congress has promised a comprehensive insurance cover of Rs 20 lakh for every family in the Union Territory, ensuring financial protection against medical emergencies. Alongside these welfare initiatives, the party has emphasized significant governance reforms. They have assured that local body elections will be conducted within six months of coming to power, while also reiterating their persistent demand for full statehood for Puducherry, a move they argue would empower local leadership.

Rahul Gandhi's Critique of BJP and Corruption Allegations

Targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rahul Gandhi accused it of failing to fulfil its promise of granting statehood to Puducherry. He alleged that the Union Territory is being run by "remote control" from Delhi, which sidelines local leadership and undermines democratic representation. Gandhi also levelled serious corruption charges, claiming that "there is a 30 per cent commission taken on all contracts" and that the government has effectively become a "collection agent," eroding public trust.

Election Details and Call to Action

Urging voters to support the Congress and its alliance partners, Rahul Gandhi stated that the party aims to form a government that truly represents the voice of the people of Puducherry. The Puducherry assembly elections will be held for 30 seats in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The current assembly's term is set to expire on June 15, setting the stage for a pivotal political contest in the region.
