The Dare Devils team of the Corps of Signals attempted a world record on July 1 by having 10 soldiers ride just two motorcycles through the 9.8-kilometer-long Atal Tunnel near Manali, Himachal Pradesh. The feat was accomplished in 9 minutes and 47.97 seconds at an altitude of 10,075 feet, according to a defence spokesperson.
World record attempt at the highest highway tunnel
Atal Tunnel, located under the Rohtang Pass, is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. The attempt was part of the nationwide 'Wheels of Valour: Sanchar Shakti' motorcycle expedition, which arrived in Palchan on June 30. The 10 riders traversed the tunnel in demanding high-altitude conditions, requiring extraordinary precision, balance, endurance, and flawless teamwork.
The achievement is one of several ambitious world record attempts planned by the Corps of Signals' Dare Devils Team to honour the spirit of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Months of intensive training, rehearsals, and technical preparation preceded this landmark accomplishment.
Safety and coordination
The entire event was conducted under comprehensive safety arrangements, with all operational and safety protocols meticulously followed. The Dare Devils coordinated closely with the civil administration, police, and road management agencies to ensure the safety of riders, officials, support staff, and other road users.
Lieutenant General Vivek Dogra, Signal Officer-in-Chief and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals, expressed gratitude to the District Administration of Manali, Himachal Pradesh Police, Director General Border Roads, Project Yojak, Project Deepak, and 38 Border Roads Task Force of the Border Roads Organisation for their cooperation and support.
Symbol of military professionalism
The record attempt marks a proud milestone for the Corps of Signals, reaffirming its tradition of excellence, innovation, and operational professionalism. It reflects the Corps' commitment to pushing adventure boundaries while upholding military discipline. The Indian Army encourages adventure activities to foster physical fitness, mental resilience, leadership, teamwork, and operational readiness.
The 'Wheels of Valour: Sanchar Shakti' expedition also carries a message of patriotism and national service. Through visits to war memorials, military establishments, educational institutions, and interactions with veterans, NCC cadets, and young citizens, the expedition celebrates the Corps' legacy and inspires the next generation to contribute to nation-building.
According to an official statement, the world record attempt at Atal Tunnel is more than a motorcycle display; it stands as a powerful symbol of courage, discipline, innovation, and teamwork, reaffirming the Corps of Signals' commitment to remain 'Swift, Secure and Connected' while inspiring India's youth to emulate values of duty, sacrifice, and excellence.
