The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has voiced concerns that the Congress party's sustained anti-Left campaign in Kerala is undermining the unity of the opposition I.N.D.I.A. bloc. CPI(M) leader Shemin Joy, speaking at a press conference on Monday, stated that such actions by Congress are detrimental to the collective strength of the alliance, which was formed to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 general elections.
Background of the Remarks
Joy's comments came a day after the conclusion of a three-day meeting of the CPI(M) Central Committee in New Delhi. During the meeting, party leaders deliberated on the current political scenario and expressed concern over the consolidation of Hindutva communal forces in West Bengal. The committee noted that the rise of such forces poses a serious challenge to secular politics in the state and the country.
Impact on Opposition Unity
The CPI(M) leader emphasized that the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, which comprises multiple opposition parties, needs to remain united to effectively challenge the BJP. However, the Congress party's aggressive stance against the Left in Kerala, where both parties are key rivals in the state assembly, is creating friction. Joy warned that such internal conflicts could weaken the bloc's overall performance in future elections.
He further stated that the CPI(M) remains committed to the alliance but expects all partners to respect each other's political space. The party has urged Congress to reconsider its strategy in Kerala, where the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) are the main contenders for power.
Reactions and Future Steps
Political analysts believe that the tension between the two parties could affect seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming by-elections and the 2026 assembly polls in Kerala. While the CPI(M) has not threatened to walk out of the bloc, it has made its displeasure clear. The Congress party, on the other hand, has not officially responded to the CPI(M)'s allegations.
The Central Committee also reviewed the party's organizational activities and discussed strategies to counter the BJP's narrative. The meeting concluded with a resolve to strengthen grassroots mobilization and focus on issues such as unemployment, inflation, and agrarian distress.
