A tragic incident has struck Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) once again. On Thursday, a female student was discovered dead in her private hostel room near the campus. The deceased has been identified as Darshana K S, a resident of Puthuvype. According to police reports, she was found hanging from a window using a piece of cloth inside her room.
Unnatural Death Case Registered
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Darshana had completed her third year in civil engineering during the 2024-2025 academic year. Sources indicate that she had been declared a 'year out' student after failing to secure the required academic credits.
University Response
Vice-Chancellor Junaid Bushiri has requested a detailed report from Chief Security Officer Sibichen Joseph. In light of this tragedy, the university has convened a high-level meeting scheduled for Tuesday at the Senate Hall. The meeting aims to review recent incidents and discuss student welfare, campus safety, and preventive measures.
This marks the second death reported from the university within a fortnight. On April 22, Dhanush D, a third-year electrical and electronics engineering student from Kumarapuram in Alappuzha, was found dead in a private hostel room near the campus.
Stakeholders to Attend Meeting
The upcoming meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including the registrar, controller of examinations, director of student welfare, chief warden, NSS coordinator, student union representatives, teachers' organizations, counsellors, medical officers, and security officials. The collective effort aims to address the growing concerns over student safety and well-being on campus.
