New Delhi: The city witnessed another sweltering day on Sunday, with a slight rise in the maximum temperature and high humidity pushing the feels-like temperature significantly higher than the actual reading. Around noon, while the mercury stood at 39 degrees Celsius, the heat index touched nearly 45 degrees Celsius, making outdoor conditions particularly uncomfortable.
Extreme Heat Ahead
Relief is expected towards the weekend; however, prior to that, Delhi will have to battle extreme heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 42 degrees Celsius and 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday. No heatwave warning has been issued yet. Relief, however, may be on the horizon, with rain forecast towards the end of the week. The wet spell is expected to bring daytime temperatures to around 35 degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius by June 12 and 13, offering respite from the prevailing heat and humidity.
Sunday's Recorded Temperatures
On Sunday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, against 40 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.7 degrees Celsius, season's normal, against 26.4 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
IMD Forecast Details
A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan Region from June 11. According to the IMD, there will be a rise in maximum temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius during the next two days, no large change during subsequent two days, and a fall by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius thereafter. Minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius till June 10, no large change during subsequent 24 hours, and fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter.
Monday's Outlook
The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 41 to 43 degrees Celsius on Monday. The air quality index (AQI), on a scale of 0 to 500, remained moderate at 144 against 176 a day earlier.
