Delhi Rains: Temperatures Drop, Showers Likely Till June 21

New Delhi: Parts of Delhi witnessed short but intense showers on Tuesday, bringing down temperatures and providing much-needed relief from the scorching heat.

Rainfall Distribution Across Delhi

Safdarjung, the city’s base station, recorded 2.8 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 11.30 am. Palam, Jafarpur, and Janakpuri received 9.1 mm, 10.5 mm, and 5.5 mm, respectively, while Najafgarh logged 24 mm during the same period. Palam had also recorded 9 mm of rainfall before 8.30 am.

IMD Forecast: Rain and Thunderstorm Activity to Continue

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that rain and thunderstorm activity is likely to persist until June 21, extending the relief from extreme heat. A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from June 18, potentially influencing weather patterns.

Temperature Trends

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature settled at 33.3 degrees Celsius, 5.5 degrees below normal, compared with 37.5 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal, against 28.2 degrees Celsius on Monday.

With rain likely to continue through the weekend, temperatures are expected to rise gradually. According to IMD, the maximum temperature is likely to hover between 33-35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, 35-37 degrees Celsius on Thursday, 36-38 degrees Celsius on Friday, and 37-39 degrees Celsius between June 20 and 22.

“A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from June 18. Maximum temperatures may rise by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the next five days, with no significant change thereafter. Minimum temperatures may increase by 2-4 degrees Celsius during the same period,” IMD said.

Air Quality Improvement

Air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category with slight improvement. The AQI stood at 116 on Tuesday, compared to 151 on Monday.
