Delimitation Debate Ignites Tamil Nadu Polls as DMK, AIADMK Clash Over Lok Sabha Expansion
Delimitation Sparks Tamil Nadu Poll Battle: DMK vs AIADMK

Delimitation Debate Heats Up Tamil Nadu Campaign Ahead of High-Stakes Assembly Polls

Just days before Tamil Nadu votes in the crucial assembly elections, campaigning has taken a dramatic turn following the Centre's proposal to expand the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850 seats. This move, aimed at implementing 33 per cent reservation for women through constituency redrawing, was defeated in Parliament but has sparked intense political debate in the state.

DMK's Fiery Opposition and Black Flag Protests

Chief Minister MK Stalin, leading the DMK-Congress alliance, has launched a fierce campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the Centre of attempting to undermine southern states. In a symbolic act, Stalin lit a copy of the bill during statewide black flag protests, declaring it a "historical injustice." He urged Tamils to resist, stating, "Let the flame of resistance spread across Tamil Nadu. Let the arrogance of BJP be brought down." Drawing parallels to past anti-Hindi agitations, Stalin warned that the delimitation could reduce Tamil Nadu's political clout.

AIADMK's Support and Counter-Claims

In contrast, the AIADMK, part of the NDA, has backed the delimitation move, accusing the DMK of stalling women's reservation. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami asserted that the Centre's clarifications indicate Tamil Nadu's parliamentary seats could rise from 39 to 59, with its share increasing slightly. He dismissed DMK's fears as electoral misinformation, questioning the public support for black flag protests.

Why Delimitation Sparks Resistance

The constitutional provision for delimitation, frozen since 1977 based on the 1971 census, aims to ensure proportional representation. However, population growth has been uneven, with northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar expanding rapidly, while southern states like Tamil Nadu stabilized due to better health and education policies. The DMK argues that unfreezing seats now would benefit BJP strongholds and diminish southern influence, potentially reducing Tamil Nadu's seats from 39 to 31.

Political Implications and Electoral Dynamics

Tamil Nadu's political landscape, dominated by Dravidian parties DMK and AIADMK, has long resisted centralization. Analysts suggest the delimitation issue could consolidate anti-BJP votes, with DMK aiming to capture over 40 per cent of the popular vote. The debate taps into deep-seated Tamil pride and identity, influencing voter decisions in the upcoming polls for the 234-seat assembly, scheduled for April 23 with results on May 4.
