Dhanbad Land Subsidence Crisis Leaves Hundreds Homeless, Relief Efforts Criticized
In the aftermath of a devastating land subsidence incident in Dhanbad, hundreds of residents from Tandabari village in Katras are facing dire circumstances, forced to spend nights in the open due to unsafe homes and inadequate relief measures. This crisis follows a tragic event earlier this week where three individuals lost their lives when their house collapsed.
Mass Displacement and Basic Amenities Shortage
With their dwellings rendered uninhabitable, over 1,000 villagers have sought refuge in nearby temples and school premises. However, they are grappling with severe shortages of essential supplies, including food, water, and bedding. The lack of proper sanitation facilities has compounded their struggles, making survival a daily challenge.
Shankar Bhuinya, an affected resident, highlighted the administration's absence, stating, "No senior officer from the district administration has reached here so far to look into the situation." Many families have resorted to moving in with relatives and friends, but hundreds remain without proper shelter.
Inadequate Relief Camp Sparks Anger
Although the district administration has established a relief camp in the area, locals allege it is grossly insufficient. Reports indicate the camp accommodates only around 50 people, leaving the majority of the displaced population without access to basic arrangements. Villagers express growing frustration over the perceived indifference from authorities.
One villager accused the administration of neglect, saying, "Many are spending nights in fear and uncertainty," and demanded immediate intervention and comprehensive relief measures. Residents had anticipated visits from senior officials to assess the ground situation and ensure adequate support, but no representatives from the district administration or BCCL have visited Tandabari or nearby areas so far.
Official Responses and Background of the Incident
Deputy Development Commissioner Sunny Raj addressed the situation, noting, "We are reviewing the situation and trying to ensure necessary action." Meanwhile, BCCL clarified that the affected area does not fall under active mining operations and includes private and raiyati land.
The crisis stems from Tuesday night's tragic subsidence in Tandabari village, where a house collapse claimed three lives, including a father and his daughter. Three other houses were damaged, impacting numerous residents and triggering the current humanitarian emergency.
