DMK Slams Rahul Gandhi for Opportunistic Alliance Switch

CHENNAI: A senior DMK MP expressed anger over Congress' dramatic switch to Tamil star Vijay after his party, TVK, emerged as the single largest party, surpassing DMK and AIADMK. The DMK functionary, a former Union minister reflecting Stalin's views, said, 'You called Ravneet Singh Bittu a traitor for crossing over to BJP. Now, you called M K Stalin on Tuesday saying you were with him, but the next morning you defected to the side you contested against. Rahul Gandhi ji, what would you like to be described as?'

Opportunism and Political Immorality

The DMK leader described Congress' move as 'opportunistic' and 'politically immoral.' He noted that DMK had spared a Rajya Sabha seat for Congress and gave them more seats than warranted by their strength. Congress contested 28 seats but won only five, largely due to DMK's groundwork. The DMK leader dismissed Congress' explanation that they needed to ally with Vijay because he had the mandate, calling it 'whitewashing brazen opportunism.' He questioned how Congress would react if DMK allied with BJP at the Centre citing Congress' successive defeats.

DMK's Consistent Support

The former Union minister emphasized that DMK consistently stood by Congress among all INDIA bloc partners, even when Rahul's actions caused unease among Congress members. He cited instances in Lok Sabha where Congress wanted to move into the well of the House, but their own MPs resisted, while DMK always complied despite government annoyance. 'Alliances are built on mutual trust. Who among allies will now trust Rahul? Will they be sure he won't dump them for profit?'

The DMK functionary attributed Rahul's electoral losses to such actions, recalling how he tore up the Manmohan Singh cabinet's decision. He also accused Congress of betraying DMK historically, dismissing Karunanidhi governments twice and bringing down the United Front government in 1996, falsely accusing DMK of complicity in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination—a charge later dropped when Congress allied with DMK in 2004.
