The Election Commission has directed the Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS), led by K Kavitha, to select an alternative name for the party following objections received regarding its acronym, party sources confirmed on Sunday.
Objections from Two Groups
Although the Election Commission received hundreds of objections, it forwarded only two to the party. One objection came from the Telangana Rajya Samithi, based in the district headquarters town of Siddipet in Telangana. The other was filed by a Maharashtra-based outfit that also uses the acronym TRS.
TRS Response and Legal Considerations
Kavitha's TRS has responded to the two objections and requested the Election Commission to provide all objections received. The party stated it would answer "every single objection," according to sources. Additionally, the party is contemplating legal recourse to defend its title.
Background of TRS Name
Kavitha, daughter of BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), launched the TRS on April 25, 2026, and subsequently published an advertisement in newspapers as per norms, calling for objections if any. The acronym TRS is widely recognized across Telangana, originally belonging to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which was the original name of the BRS headed by KCR. KCR changed the party's name from TRS to BRS in December 2022 with ambitious plans to expand beyond Telangana, but those plans suffered a setback when BRS lost power in December 2023. KCR had originally launched TRS in 2001 to advocate for the formation of Telangana state.
