The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a summons to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the primary school recruitment case in West Bengal. The questioning is scheduled for June 15, as the central agency continues its probe into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.
Investigation Details
The ED is focusing on tracing the trail of proceeds of crime allegedly generated through the illegal recruitment of primary school teachers in the state. Besides the ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also looking into other aspects of the case. The dual probe aims to uncover the full extent of the scam, which has been a major political flashpoint in West Bengal.
Abhishek Banerjee, a key leader of the TMC and nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in the case. The summons comes as part of the ED's broader investigation into money laundering charges linked to the recruitment scam.
Political Reactions
The TMC has dismissed the ED's action as politically motivated, accusing the central government of targeting opposition leaders ahead of elections. However, the ED maintains that its investigation is based on evidence and legal procedures. The case has reignited debates about corruption in the state's education sector.
Abhishek Banerjee is expected to appear before the ED on June 15 to provide his statement. The outcome of the questioning could have significant implications for the TMC, which has been facing multiple corruption allegations in recent months.
