Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh has strongly criticized the state government over the recent Pune rape and murder case, demanding the immediate implementation of the stringent Shakti Act. Deshmukh, who served as home minister under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, highlighted that the act was passed unanimously by both Houses of the state legislature during his tenure.
Shakti Act: A Deterrent Against Crimes Against Women
The Shakti Act, officially known as the Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law (Maharashtra Amendment) Act, 2020, was enacted to provide swift justice and stringent punishment for offenses against women. It includes provisions for death penalty in cases of rape and murder, as well as stricter penalties for other heinous crimes. Deshmukh emphasized that the law was designed to act as a powerful deterrent and ensure the safety of women in the state.
Deshmukh's Criticism of the Current Government
Speaking to the media, Deshmukh accused the current administration of neglecting the implementation of the Shakti Act. He stated, "The law was passed with the intention of protecting women and delivering justice swiftly. However, the present government has failed to enforce it effectively, leading to a rise in such brutal incidents." He further added that the Pune rape-murder case is a stark reminder of the urgent need to activate the provisions of the act.
Details of the Pune Rape-Murder Case
The incident, which occurred in Pune, has sparked widespread outrage across the state. A young woman was allegedly raped and murdered, with the perpetrators yet to be apprehended. The case has reignited debates about women's safety and the effectiveness of existing laws. Deshmukh's remarks come amid growing public demand for stricter action against offenders.
Political Reactions and Demands
Several opposition leaders have echoed Deshmukh's sentiments, calling for the full implementation of the Shakti Act. They argue that the law's provisions, including fast-track courts and enhanced penalties, are crucial for combating gender-based violence. The MVA coalition, which originally introduced the act, has urged the current government to take immediate steps to operationalize it.
Deshmukh concluded by saying, "The state government must wake up to the reality. The Shakti Act is not just a piece of legislation; it is a commitment to the safety and dignity of every woman in Maharashtra. Its implementation is non-negotiable."
