External Elements Incited Noida Labor Protests, Says UP Government
The Uttar Pradesh government issued a detailed statement on Wednesday, revealing that a significant portion of those arrested during the recent unrest in Noida were not actual workers. According to the authorities, external elements played a crucial role in orchestrating violence and arson, transforming what began as a wage hike protest into a broader conspiracy to disrupt the region's economic stability.
Arrests and Investigation Findings
Out of the 66 individuals apprehended in connection with the protests, 45 were identified as non-workers, highlighting the involvement of outsiders. The government emphasized that this was not merely a case of labor agitation but a well-planned scheme designed to create disorder under the guise of a workers' movement.
Key arrest statistics from the probe include:
- In arson cases, 17 people were identified, with 11 arrested; eight of these were non-workers.
- For incitement, 32 individuals were identified, and 19 have been arrested so far.
- Additionally, 34 non-workers were taken into custody for allegedly participating in protests and attempting to vitiate the atmosphere.
- Four people were arrested on charges of hatching the conspiracy, with investigations ongoing into their potential links to organized networks.
Violence and Property Damage
The protests, which turned violent on Monday, resulted in significant property damage. According to reports from news agency PTI, vehicles, including police SUVs, were set ablaze, public property was vandalized, and incidents of stone-pelting were reported from various factory hubs in Noida. The unrest initially stemmed from workers demanding a wage increase, but quickly escalated due to external influences.
Government Response and Normalization
The Uttar Pradesh administration, acting on directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, implemented prompt measures to restore order. The situation was brought under control within hours, and industrial activity has since returned to normal. Following the announcement of a wage hike, both laborers and factory owners cooperated, facilitating a swift resumption of operations across Noida.
The government statement affirmed, "Factories are functioning normally and both workers and industry stakeholders are cooperating."
Broader Implications and Ongoing Scrutiny
The statement alleged that the incident was part of a larger attempt to destabilize Noida's economic ecosystem, with possible involvement from certain political elements and organized groups. Authorities are also examining the role of specific social media handles in spreading misinformation and exacerbating tensions during the protests.
Interestingly, the probe revealed that some women from different states were actively involved in the protests, aiding those engaged in violent activities. This aspect underscores the coordinated nature of the unrest.
Zero Tolerance Policy
The Uttar Pradesh government reiterated its "zero tolerance" policy towards any attempts to disturb law and order. Strict action will continue against all individuals found involved in the incident, ensuring that such disruptions are prevented in the future. The swift response and ongoing investigations aim to maintain peace and support the region's industrial growth.
