Faridkot in Punjab recorded a scorching 47 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the highest temperature in the state this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next four days, warning of severe heatwave conditions across several districts.
Heatwave Conditions Worsen
The IMD's orange alert indicates that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in many parts of Punjab, including Faridkot, Bathinda, and Patiala. Temperatures are expected to remain above normal by 4-6 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Faridkot was 47°C, while Bathinda recorded 45.6°C and Patiala 44.2°C.
Health Advisory Issued
Health authorities have advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. People are urged to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated. The elderly and children are particularly vulnerable. Hospitals have been instructed to keep beds ready for heatstroke cases.
Key Precautions:
- Stay indoors between 11 am and 4 pm.
- Drink plenty of water and oral rehydration solutions.
- Avoid strenuous activities outdoors.
- Use umbrellas or hats when going out.
Impact on Agriculture
The heatwave is also affecting crops, especially wheat and mustard. Farmers have been advised to irrigate their fields early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce moisture loss. The state agriculture department is monitoring the situation closely.
IMD officials said the heatwave is due to the absence of western disturbances and the prevalence of dry winds from the northwest. The orange alert will remain in effect until Sunday, with a slight drop in temperatures expected from Monday.
