The Law Ministry on Tuesday issued a notification appointing five new judges to the Supreme Court, filling existing vacancies and strengthening the highest judiciary in the country. The appointments come as part of the ongoing process to ensure the smooth functioning of the court.
Details of the Appointments
The newly appointed judges include Justice Surya Kant, who was serving as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Other appointees are Justice A.S. Bopanna, Justice M.M. Sundresh, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, and Justice J.K. Maheshwari. Their appointments will take effect from the date they assume office.
Strengthening the Judiciary
The elevation of these judges is expected to reduce the backlog of cases and enhance the efficiency of the Supreme Court. The appointments were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium and subsequently approved by the President of India.
