Union minister Nitin Gadkari has expressed strong views on the state of politics in India, highlighting a concerning trend of politicians abandoning their ideological commitments for power. Speaking at an event in Amravati, Gadkari asserted that finding politicians who remain true to their ideology has become a rarity.
Gadkari's Critique of Political Defections
Addressing a programme organized by Shiv Parivar to felicitate Shri Shivaji Education Society (SSES) president Hardhawardhan Deshmukh and treasurer Dilip Ingole on the completion of their 75th year of life, Gadkari did not mince words. He stated that 90% of players in politics switch allegiance to join the party that forms the government. 'The real reason is the decline of commitment to principles, goals, and ideology in politics,' he said, slamming defectors.
Analogy of the Fish
To emphasize his point, Gadkari used the analogy of a fish that swims against the current. 'Only sticks, rubbish, and dead fish are seen flowing with the current,' he remarked, stressing the importance of upholding one's ideology in politics.
Redefining Politics
Gadkari called for a change in the definition of politics. 'Politics is not just about power. Politics is social work, nation-building, and development. It is a tool for socio-economic reform,' he said. He cited the example of educationist Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh, who followed this ideology and brought reforms in education and agriculture.
He contrasted long-term vision with short-term electoral gains. 'Those who think of society and the country plan for 100 years, while those who want to win the next election naturally think of the next five years. But I will not compromise on my ideology and never resort to caste-based politics. Some friends advised me not to say this publicly as this would lead to poll defeat. I have never worried about defeats,' Gadkari asserted.
