General Manoj Mukund Naravane, the Chief of Army Staff, has strongly refuted allegations that he was abandoned by the government during the ongoing India-China border standoff in eastern Ladakh. In a statement, he cautioned against politicising the army, emphasising that the institution must remain apolitical.
General Naravane's Clarification
Addressing the media, General Naravane said, "There is no truth in the claims that I was left isolated or abandoned. The government and the army have always worked in unison to protect the nation's interests." He added that such baseless rumours only serve to undermine the morale of the armed forces.
Appeal to Political Parties
The Army Chief urged all political parties to refrain from using the army as a tool for political gain. "The Indian Army is a symbol of national pride and unity. It should not be dragged into political debates," he stated. He further stressed that the army's focus remains on safeguarding the country's borders and ensuring national security.
Background of the Standoff
India and China have been locked in a tense military standoff in the Galwan Valley and other areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since May 2020. Several rounds of military and diplomatic talks have been held to de-escalate the situation, but a complete resolution remains elusive.
Allegations and Counter-Allegations
Recent reports had suggested that General Naravane was not adequately supported by the political leadership during the crisis. However, the Army Chief dismissed these claims, calling them "mischievous and motivated." He reiterated that the government has provided all necessary resources and support to the armed forces.
Call for National Unity
General Naravane concluded by calling for national unity in the face of external threats. "We must stand together as one nation. Any attempt to create divisions within the army or between the army and the government is detrimental to our national security," he warned. The army remains committed to its duty, and the soldiers are prepared to face any challenge.
The Army Chief's remarks come at a time when the opposition has been critical of the government's handling of the border situation. However, General Naravane's statement underscores the need for a unified approach to address the complex geopolitical challenges posed by China.
