Patna: An 18-year-old girl is feared drowned in the Ganga river, while two others were rescued by locals in the Barh sub-division of Patna district on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Kajal Kumari, a resident of Rahui in Nalanda district. She had come to the ghat for a purification bath following her grandfather’s shraddh rituals.
Incident Details
Barh Station House Officer (SHO) Braj Kishore Singh stated that approximately 20 to 25 family members had gathered for the ritual bath. “Three women were bathing together when they began to drown. Two were rescued, but Kajal went missing. Search operations are underway,” he said.
Previous Boat Capsizing Incident
This incident comes a day after a boat carrying 14 people capsized near Umanath Ganga ghat on Thursday, resulting in five deaths and two individuals still missing. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are continuing search operations for the missing persons.
The bodies recovered so far include Leela Devi (30), Shravan Mahto (36), Kashi Kumar (14), Kanchan alias Kabootri (16), and Neelam Devi (40). Rahul Kumar and Mamta Devi remain missing.
A survivor named Tuntun, who lost his wife Neelam Devi in the mishap, recounted that the boat was caught in strong currents before overturning in a sudden gust of wind. “I saved several people, but could not save my wife,” he lamented.
Compensation Announced
Circle Officer Narendra Kumar Singh confirmed that an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh has been provided to the families of the deceased. Compensation for others will be given after the recovery of the bodies.
